Step Drag Bit

Taking the traction drilling machine as an example, its typical structure includes:

Power and transmission system: The tractor's power output shaft drives the gearbox through a universal joint, adjusting the speed to the required value of the hydraulic oil pump. ‌

Hydraulic system: including hydraulic oil pump, motor, directional valve, speed regulating valve, etc., to achieve independent and stable control of drill bit rotation and feed speed, and has overload protection function. ‌

Drilling device: composed of drill bit, pulley, and guide rail. A drill bit typically consists of a drill tip, blades, spiral blades, and a spindle. It is driven to rotate by a hydraulic motor, while another motor controls its lifting and feeding through a chain drive. ‌

The work process includes two parts: cutting soil and lifting soil. When the drill bit rotates and feeds downwards, the spiral blades transport the soil upwards along a specific trajectory. To ensure the continuity of the operation, the drill bit speed needs to be higher than the critical value calculated theoretically. The movement of soil on the surface of the drill bit can be divided into three zones to achieve effective soil lifting function. ‌‌

3 wings step drag bits

3 wings step drag bits are one piece construction of alloy steel cast with tungsten carbide cutting tips and gauge sides to ensure longer life. It has 3 wings and 3 flushing holes. Compared with 4 wings, 3 wings step drag bits tend to drill faster and aggressive, whereas, are shorter lasting and less durable.3 wings step style drag bits will produce larger cuttings force than chevron style drag bit. Rotary table speed ofstep drag bits should be between 60 and 80 rpm with light weight on bit (WOB).

3 wings step drag bits are economical tools when drilling softer geological formations and shallower depths, they are primarilydesigned for soft tomedium formations, such as Clay, Loam, Silt ,Mostsoft-to-medium soilsthat have some moisture, etc. And also step drag bits are recommended for drilling in Mining, Exploration, Environmental, Water well, Geo Exchange, etc.
